US-Canada-Mexico Trade War Erupts After Trump Imposes Tariffs

New Delhi, 2nd Feb.
In a move that has sparked an intense trade dispute, US President Donald Trump on Saturday signed an executive order to impose heavy tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. This decision has drawn swift and fierce retaliations from both of the US’s North American neighbors, signaling the onset of a growing trade war.

Reacting immediately, outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a retaliatory measure, stating that Canada would impose 25% tariffs on US imports worth a total of USD 155 billion. Trudeau outlined that the response would be phased, starting with tariffs on American goods worth USD 30 billion beginning Tuesday, with additional tariffs on the remaining USD 125 billion over the next 21 days to give Canadian businesses time to adjust and find alternative sources.

Not far behind, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned Trump’s decision, vowing that her country would retaliate against the imposed tariffs. Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s firm stance and hinted at a range of countermeasures to protect the nation’s economy.

Trump’s aggressive tariff actions have triggered an economic standoff, with both Canada and Mexico bracing for further escalation. Meanwhile, China, another key target of Trump’s tariffs, is also preparing its own retaliatory measures, adding further complexity to the global trade landscape.

The situation remains volatile, with tensions set to escalate as each country takes a firm stance in this emerging trade war.
