Washington, 10th July.
The United States on Tuesday called on India to support peace efforts in Ukraine after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s successful meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The White House emphasized India’s role as a “strategic partner” and highlighted its potential influence over Russia to help end the over two-year conflict in Ukraine.

“India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in full and frank dialogue, including their relationship with Russia,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during a press briefing. “We think it’s critical that all countries, including India, support efforts to realize an enduring and just peace in Ukraine. India’s long-standing relationship with Russia gives it the ability to urge President Putin to end his brutal and unprovoked war in Ukraine.”

Jean-Pierre reiterated that the decision to end the war ultimately lies with Putin, as he initiated the conflict.

The US State Department echoed these sentiments, expressing concerns about India’s relationship with Russia and urging New Delhi to support peace efforts. “We have been quite clear about our concerns regarding India’s relationship with Russia,” stated State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller. “We urge India to support efforts to realize an enduring and just peace in Ukraine, based on the principles of the UN charter and upholding Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”

The US Defence Department also weighed in, with Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder affirming the importance of India’s strategic partnership with the US. “India and Russia have had a relationship for a very long time. From a US perspective, India is a strategic partner with whom we continue to engage in full and frank dialogue,” said Ryder.

He further noted that PM Modi’s recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the G7 Summit signaled India’s support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. “We trust that India will support efforts to realize an enduring and just peace for Ukraine and will convey to Mr. Putin the importance of adhering to the UN charter and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Ryder added.

Prime Minister Modi’s Stance

During his meeting with President Putin, PM Modi emphasized that there is no military solution to the conflict in Ukraine and that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable paths forward. He assured that India is ready to cooperate in efforts to restore peace. “For the restoration of peace, India is ready to cooperate in all ways. I assure you and the world community that India is in favor of peace,” said Modi. He added that Putin shared a similar sentiment during their discussions.

Putin acknowledged the special strategic partnership between Russia and India and thanked PM Modi for his peace efforts. Modi’s remarks during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in 2022, where he stated “This is not an era of war,” were also recalled and praised for their timeliness and relevance.

US Expectations

The US hopes that India will use its “special partnership” with Russia to exert pressure on Moscow to cease hostilities and work towards a durable peace in the region. “We believe India’s relationship with Russia gives it the ability to influence Putin and urge an end to the conflict,” said US State Department Hindustani spokesperson Margaret MacLeod.

The call for India’s support comes as part of a broader effort by the US and its allies to unite international efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine and uphold global principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
