Uphari Village in Madhya Pradesh Transforms with Clean Drinking Water Under PM Janman Yojana

In a remarkable transformation, Uphari village in Karanjia block of Dindori district, Madhya Pradesh, once grappling with severe water scarcity, has now become self-reliant with access to clean drinking water. This is the same village where villagers previously had to travel long distances for every drop of water, and women and children spent a significant portion of their day fetching water. However, this has now become a thing of the past.

Gangaram Baiga, a village elder, recalls the hardships faced during the summers when water scarcity reached alarming levels. “There were times when we had to fetch water at night. On many occasions, people fell ill due to contaminated water from the streams. We never imagined that our village would have tap water, but now everything has changed. It feels like a miracle,” he shares.

Uphari village, once struggling with a severe water crisis, has benefited significantly from the implementation of the PM Janman Yojana and the Jal Jeevan Mission. The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) constructed a large drinking water tank in the village, ensuring piped water supply to every household. The main objective of this initiative was to provide clean drinking water to tribal families, ending their battle with water scarcity.

Sukli Bai, a village woman, shares her relief: “Earlier, we had to wake up early every day to fetch water. Sometimes, we even had to go at night because mornings were crowded. Our entire routine revolved around water. Now, we no longer have to worry about that. We have more time for other tasks, and we can focus on our farming and caring for our children.”

With a population of around 530, Uphari village now has 110 families benefiting from household tap connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Clean drinking water is now available to the villagers, resolving multiple issues. The most significant benefit is the reduction in waterborne diseases, which were once common due to contaminated water, leading to conditions like diarrhea and jaundice. The local health center has reported a marked decline in such cases.

Both the elders and youth in the village describe the initiative as a life-changing and revolutionary step. They see it as more than just a water supply project—it’s a milestone in improving their overall quality of life. The villagers have wholeheartedly embraced this change and view the PM Janman Yojana as a source of development that has given Uphari a new identity.

With access to clean water, women are now free from the daily struggle of water collection, allowing them to focus on their homes, families, and livelihoods. Children no longer face interruptions in their education, and most importantly, the threat of waterborne diseases has significantly reduced. Many families are now exploring new sources of livelihood, with optimism for a better future.

The entire village is excited about the positive impact of the PM Janman Yojana and Jal Jeevan Mission. The villagers have expressed their gratitude towards Prime Minister Modi and the government, recognizing the scheme as not only a means of providing water but also a historic step towards uplifting their standard of living. Uphari village is now on a path of progress, where every household has access to water, and the community is moving forward with renewed hope and prosperity.
