Kannauj, 21st Dec.
A groundbreaking marriage in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj saw two women unite as a couple, with one of them undergoing a gender change to navigate societal pressures and defamation concerns.

Ranu (formerly Shivangi) and Jyoti tied the knot in a grand ceremony on November 25, securing the blessings of their families. The union took place at Kannauj’s Sadar Kotwali, marking a significant step forward in their journey of love and acceptance.

Love Story That Defied Norms

Shivangi, the daughter of jeweller Indra Gupta, first met Jyoti when the latter approached her for a rental space to open a beauty parlour. Their relationship grew over time, and they decided to marry. However, societal stigma surrounding same-sex marriages led the couple to a bold decision: Shivangi would undergo a gender change.

Gender Transition and Marriage

The process involved consultations with doctors in Lucknow and Delhi. Shivangi underwent a series of surgeries costing approximately ₹7 lakh and changed her name to Ranu. Although one final surgery remains, the couple chose to proceed with their wedding, celebrating their union with pomp and familial approval.

Breaking Barriers

The marriage highlights the courage of the couple and the evolving attitudes of their families in a society often resistant to non-traditional unions. It also underscores the financial and emotional challenges faced by individuals in similar situations.

The couple’s journey stands as a testament to love’s ability to transcend societal barriers, inspiring others to pursue acceptance and equality.
