Hamirpur, 28th Dec. Police in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh have filed a First Information Report (FIR) after the wife of a revenue officer claimed that he was forcibly converted to Islam and made to marry a Muslim woman.
The incident came to light when Arti Gupta discovered the wedding through social media, as her husband Ashish Kumar Gupta, a naib tehsildar in Maudaha tehsil of Hamirpur, had been absent from home for nearly four months.
According to the police, Ashish Kumar Gupta has not been located yet. Arti Gupta, a resident of Kanpur city, filed a complaint at the City Kotwali Police Station, stating that her husband was coerced into converting to Islam and marrying a woman named Rukhsaar.
A case has been registered against five individuals, including the Naib Tehsildar, and approximately six unidentified people. Two of them, including a maulvi at a local mosque in Maudaha, have been detained.
Arti Gupta informed the police that her husband was involved in an affair with Rukhsaar. She alleged in her complaint that Rukhsaar’s father, Munna, Maulvi Babu Aadhati of a local mosque in Maudaha, and four to five others forcibly converted Ashish Gupta on December 24 and arranged his marriage to Rukhsaar.
The police have registered a case against Ashish Gupta, Rukhsaar, her father Munna, Aadhati, and five to six unidentified individuals under section 494 of the Indian Penal Code (marrying again during the lifetime of a spouse) and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.
The accused maulvi and Munna have been taken into custody and are currently being interrogated. However, the reports of Ashish Gupta offering namaz in a mosque in Maudaha could not be verified.
The statements of local residents in Maudaha have been recorded as part of the investigation. Balram Gupta, the Tehsildar of Maudaha, stated that the claims of Ashish Gupta offering namaz in a mosque could not be confirmed.
