Lucknow, 15th Feb. Uttar Pradesh Minister Asim Arun on Friday advised comedians to balance “provoking thought and maintaining respect”, urging them to avoid mocking individuals based on personal circumstances. His remarks come amid a growing debate over comic content and social media influence, following the controversy surrounding YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks on Samay Raina’s now-deleted show, ‘India’s Got Latent’.
Allahbadia’s viral clip has triggered legal scrutiny across multiple states, sparking discussions on the ethical boundaries of comedy.
Comedy Should Not Rely on Ridicule: Arun
In a Facebook post, Minister Arun emphasized that humor should not be built on ridiculing physical appearance, disabilities, poverty, or language. He pointed out that while childhood jokes on baldness and obesity were once common, society has evolved to be more sensitive.
“Sadly, some people have become insensitive again,” he remarked, referring to a YouTuber’s recent joke about disabilities.
Arun stressed that the real challenge for comedians is to evoke thought without being offensive. “Does comedy need to rely on mocking someone’s personal situation? Can humor only exist through hurtful remarks?” he questioned.
With increasing scrutiny on online content, the minister’s statement underscores the responsibility of artists and content creators to engage audiences without resorting to disrespectful humor.
