Union Minister Giriraj Reignites his Call for Strict Population Control Law

Patna, 11th July. Union Minister Giriraj Singh made a new pitch on Monday for a strict law to control the country’s population, which he compared to the ever-expanding mouth of the mythical female demon “Sursa.”

On the occasion of World Population Day, the fiery BJP leader issued a video statement, which he shared on Twitter.

Singh, who represents the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, bemoaned the fact that, over the last three decades, India has lagged behind China in terms of economic progress while outpacing it in terms of population growth.

“We have limited resources. Our population is expanding like the mouth of Sursa. The perverse mindset (vikrit mansikta) out of which one person sires 10 children can not be allowed,” Singh fumed.

He went on to say that a strict population control law (‘kada kanoon’) is urgently needed, “applicable across the country and to people of all religious affiliations”.

“The demand for such a law must be raised, from Parliament to the streets (‘sansad se sadak tak’),” said the BJP leader.

Singh’s declaration contrasts sharply with the viewpoint of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose JD(U) is the BJP’s largest national ally.

Kumar has frequently criticised a legislative approach to population stabilisation, citing the state’s own experience, in which fertility rates have declined in tandem with rise in women’s education.

Furthermore, political parties have frequently claimed that the BJP uses the bogey of population explosion to justify dog-whistling against Muslims, whom it accuses of attempting to change demographics by procreating more.

Surprisingly, concerns about “changed demography” have frequently led “fringe elements” to urge Hindus to have more children.
