UNITED NATIONS, 20th Sept.
UN head Antonio Guterres on Tuesday told the world leaders that thousands of people killed, injured or displaced by the floods in Derna, Libya, were “victims many times over” of conflict and climate change.
Mr. Guterres said Derna is a “sad snapshot of the state of our world”, as humanitarians in Libya continue to assess needs in the wake of the disaster.
UN refugee agency Assistant Chief of Mission, Rana Ksaifi said that “The situation on the ground is catastrophic. I have been a humanitarian worker for over 19 years and this is one of the worst disasters that I have witnessed. The level of destruction is unfathomable”:
He said an estimated 30,000 people have been displaced in Derna alone.
Christopher Laker, the UNDP Resident Representative in Libya said that 97 percent of some neighbourhoods had been “washed away” as dams collapsed.
He highlighted the urgent need for maintenance of Libya’s water reservoirs and dams and said that UNDP teams would be supporting the authorities with infrastructure assessments.
