New Delhi, 19th Sept. The Uchana Kalan constituency in Haryana is poised to become a major battleground in the upcoming October 5 assembly elections, with a high-profile contest between two prominent political families. The constituency, known for its Jat dominance, is set to witness a clash between Dushyant Singh Chautala, the great-grandson of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal, and Brijendra Singh, the son of former Union Minister Birender Singh.
Dushyant Chautala, the incumbent MLA from Uchana Kalan and a leader of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), is seeking re-election. Chautala, who is the grandson of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, aims to continue his family’s legacy in the region. His campaign has been marked by pointed criticisms of his rivals and an assertive stance against his party’s former ally, the BJP. Chautala’s key promises include a 50% reservation for women in teaching jobs in government institutions and a Rs 21,000 monthly honorarium for Anganwadi and Accredited Social Health Activists.
Brijendra Singh, the Congress candidate, has entered the fray after a notable political shift. Singh, who previously served as a BJP MP from Hisar, joined Congress earlier this year along with his father Birender Singh. Despite his prior affiliation with the BJP, Brijendra Singh’s focus appears to be on portraying the contest as primarily against the BJP rather than against Chautala. Singh, holding a master’s degree in Public Policy and Management from Kings College in London, has emphasized his commitment to the constituency’s future and highlighted a purported wave of support for Congress.
The BJP has fielded Devender Chatar Bhuj Attri for Uchana Kalan, who is contesting his first assembly election. Attri, who has served the local community for over a decade, is campaigning on issues such as the lack of government college and sports stadium in the constituency, as well as water scarcity.
Historically, Uchana Kalan has been a stronghold for the Birender Singh family, with the former Union Minister himself holding the seat five times before it was claimed by Dushyant Chautala in 2019. Chautala’s victory was substantial, as he defeated Prem Lata Singh, Brijendra Singh’s mother, by over 47,000 votes. This was a significant win, as Prem Lata had previously defeated Chautala in 2014.
With the assembly polls drawing near, Uchana Kalan remains a focal point of political attention in Haryana. The October 5 elections will be crucial in determining whether the constituency continues to align with Chautala’s JJP, embraces Brijendra Singh’s Congress, or shifts to BJP’s Attri amidst a broader electoral battle.
As the election campaign intensifies, all eyes will be on Uchana Kalan to gauge its political leanings and the broader implications for Haryana’s political landscape.
