TSF Blocks Agartala Roads Over Roman Script Demand for Kokborok

Agartala: Agartala witnessed massive disruptions today as activists from the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) blocked VIP roads leading to the airport, Assembly, and High Court, demanding the adoption of the Roman script for Kokborok — one of Tripura’s official languages. The protest coincided with the first day of the state’s Budget Session, intensifying the tribal students’ decades-old demand.

Hundreds of TSF and Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) members gathered at key intersections, causing heavy traffic congestion. Commuters faced long delays while security personnel struggled to clear the roads.

TSF in-charge and YTF General Secretary James Debbarma criticized the state government for ignoring their demand for over five decades, despite repeated assurances. “The Roman script is widely used among Kokborok speakers, and we will not back down until our demand is met,” Debbarma asserted.

The protest held symbolic weight as it directly impacted ministers and MLAs heading to the Assembly for the Budget Session, forcing them to take detours.

Law enforcement agencies were deployed to maintain order, urging protesters to vacate the roads and warning of legal action if disruptions continued. The TSF, however, has vowed to persist with its indefinite strike until concrete steps are taken to implement the Roman script for Kokborok.
