Washington, 28th Nov: A day after two National Guard troops were shot near the White House, former US President Donald Trump blamed the Biden administration’s 2021 “Operation Allies Welcome”, alleging it brought “totally unvetted and unchecked” Afghan nationals into the United States.
The shooter, identified as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, had migrated to the US following the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Trump shared an image from the 2021 evacuation on Truth Social, calling it a “horrendous airlift” and vowing to “fix it”, while accusing President Joe Biden of endangering national security.
The attack unfolded at around 2:15 pm on Wednesday. Lakanwal allegedly fired at a female National Guard member, shooting her in the chest and head, before turning his weapon on a second guard. He was subsequently taken down by a third guard.
Twenty-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, a native of Summersville, West Virginia, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday morning. She had been serving with the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade of the West Virginia Army National Guard since June 2023.
The second guard survived the attack. Authorities are continuing their investigation and are expected to announce formal charges soon.
