Mumbai, 21st June. Is everything in Maharashtra’s Maha Vikas Aghadi government alright? Eknath Shinde, a key Shiv Sena leader and state cabinet minister, has reportedly gone inaccessible with ten party MLAs a day after suspected cross-voting in Maharashtra MLC polls.
Shinde and ten Shiv Sena MLAs, according to sources, have moved to a hotel in Surat, Gujarat. Sanjay Raut, the head of the Shiv Sena, confirmed the happenings, saying, “Some Shiv Sena MLAs and Eknath Shinde are currently unavailable. Attempts are being made to destabilise the MVA government, but the BJP must keep in mind that Maharashtra is not the same as Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh.”
Shinde is a powerful figure in the Shiv Sena, and he has played a key role in the Thane region’s growth.
Eknath Shinde, a Bal Thackeray supporter who is apparently unhappy with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, will conduct a press conference in Surat today, according to sources. The revelations are likely to add to Uddhav Thackeray’s worries.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray convened a special meeting of all Shiv Sena MLAs. According to sources, all MLAs have been requested to attend the meeting.
After the Shiv Sena split from the BJP in 2014, Shinde was named Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. In the MVA government, he was appointed as a cabinet minister. Shinde, however, has been feeling marginalised since the MVA government was formed, according to sources.
Shrikant Shinde, his son, is a Lok Sabha member from Kalyan.
When asked about Shinde’s “unreachability,” Narayan Rane, a former Shiv Sena politician who joined the BJP and is now a Union Minister in the Modi government, stated, “No remarks should be made on such things, else what is the point of being unreachable?”
Chandrakant Handore, a Congress MVA candidate, was defeated in the MLS votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won five seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena each won two, and the Congress won one seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) that went to polls on Monday.
Taking to Twitter, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said, “Maharashtra Vidhan Parishad election results – Shiv Sena (Mafia Sena) got 52 votes. 12 MLA’s revolted (55 Shiv Sena + 9 supporters = 64) Uddhav Thackeray’s Mafia Sarkar’s countdown started.”
There were eleven people running for the ten seats in the MLC. Pravin Darekar, Ram Shinde, Shrikant Bharatiya, Uma Khapre, and Prasad Lad — the BJP’s five candidates — all won. The NCP’s Ramraje Nimbalkar and Eknath Khadse, as well as the Shiv Sena’s Aamshya Padavi and Sachin Ahir, all won seats. Bhai Jagtap, one of the two candidates fielded by the Congress, won, while Chandrakant Handore lost.
BJP’s winning candidate claimed that cross-voting happened among members of Shiv Sena and Congress.
“We are very happy. Maharashtra has shown faith in the BJP. Cross-voting happened among members of Shiv Sena and Congress. Otherwise, we would not have received so many votes. BJP will get more victory and receive 134 votes,” said BJP leader Pravin Darekar.
The BJP has 106 MLAs, the Shiv Sena has 56, the NCP has 53, and the Congress has 44. A total of 285 members cast their votes in the MLC polls. Former Home Ministers Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik were not allowed to vote since they are in judicial detention on money laundering charges.
