‘Trolls Welcome to Distort My Words’: Tharoor Hits Back at Critics

New Delhi, 29th May: Caught in a political storm after he praised the Modi government’s handling of terrorism, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has hit back at his critics — including some within his own party — saying he has “better things to do” than respond to “trolls and zealots.”

Tharoor is currently leading an Indian delegation as part of the Centre’s global outreach following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. After engagements in the US and Panama, he is now headed to Bogota, Colombia.

Late Tuesday night, just hours before departing for Colombia, Tharoor took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that his praise was about recent counter-terror operations — not a revision of India’s military history.

“For those zealots fulminating about my supposed ignorance of Indian valour across the LoC,” he wrote, “I was clearly and explicitly speaking only about reprisals for terrorist attacks and not about previous wars.” Tharoor pointed out that he had specifically referenced recent attacks and India’s traditionally restrained responses due to its respect for the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB).

“But as usual, critics and trolls are welcome to distort my views and words as they see fit,” he added. “I genuinely have better things to do. Goodnight.”

Tharoor’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some in the Congress party accusing him of aligning too closely with the BJP’s narrative. However, others have lauded his nuanced stand, saying national security deserves bipartisan support.

Known for speaking his mind, Tharoor’s statement is a reminder of the tightrope many leaders walk when addressing sensitive issues like terrorism — especially when they go against the grain of their party’s rhetoric.
