TRAI Issues Warning Amidst Surge in Fraudulent Communications

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 7th June.
Reports have surfaced regarding a surge in fraudulent communications allegedly from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Perpetrators are resorting to deceptive tactics such as WhatsApp messages, SMSs, and voice calls, masquerading as TRAI representatives. These fraudulent messages often bear falsified notices, cunningly crafted to mimic official correspondence from senior TRAI officials.

The modus operandi of these fraudsters involves baseless allegations of illegal activities associated with the recipient’s mobile number. Victims are coerced into contacting law enforcement or risk facing service termination. Furthermore, citizens are subjected to threats of mobile number disconnection if they fail to comply. In some instances, malicious actors may even endeavor to dupe individuals into installing malware or clicking on phishing links.

Clarifying its stance, TRAI has emphasized that it does not engage in communication regarding mobile number disconnection through messages or official notices. The regulatory body has categorically stated that it has not authorized any third-party entity to approach customers for such matters. Therefore, any communication purporting to be from TRAI and threatening mobile number disconnection should be treated with suspicion and caution.

In an effort to combat the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrime and financial fraud, citizens are urged to promptly report any suspected fraudulent communications.

The Department of Telecommunications has introduced the Chakshu facility on its Sanchar Saathi platform for this purpose. Concerned individuals can access the platform at https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/.

Additionally, victims of confirmed cybercrimes are advised to report incidents through the designated cybercrime helpline number ‘1930’ or via the official website at https://cybercrime.gov.in/.
