Notably, former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested on Saturday by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the West Bengal School Service Commission and West Bengal Primary Education Board recruitment scams.

The arrest comes after the central probe agency raided his close associate Arpita Mukherjee’s residence and seized Rs 20 crore in cash in connection with an alleged teacher recruitment scam in the state.

The arrests were made at Chatterjee’s home in Kolkata. The ED team had been on the scene since yesterday.

Earlier on Friday, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials raided the residences of Bengal ministers Partha Chatterjee and Paresh Adhikari, among others, and recovered large sums of cash totaling approximately Rs 20 crore from the home of Arpita Mukherjee, a close associate of Partha Chatterjee. The aforementioned sum is suspected to be the proceeds of crime from the SSC scam.

The search team took help of bank officials to count cash using cash counting machines.

More than 20 mobile phones were also recovered from Arpita Mukherjee’s home, the purpose and use of which is being determined, according to the investigation agency.

Apart from cash, a number of other incriminating documents, records, details of dubious companies, electronic devices, foreign currency, and gold have been recovered from the various premises of the scam’s participants.

It is worth noting that the High Court of Calcutta recently directed the CBI to conduct investigations into the recruitment scam of Group ‘C’ and ‘D’ staff, Assistant Teachers of Classes IX-XII, and primary teachers in a slew of writ petitions.

The ED is investigating cases involving the illegal appointment of non-teaching staff (Group C & D), teaching staff [Assistant teachers (Class IX-XII) and primary school teachers] under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. (PMLA).
