Thrissur, 28th Dec. LDF-backed Thrissur Mayor M.K. Varghese has hit back at CPI leader V.S. Sunil Kumar over allegations stemming from a recent meeting with BJP state president K. Surendran. The controversy, centered on Surendran offering Varghese a Christmas cake, has sparked political debates and accusations of shifting loyalties.
Varghese dismissed the claims as baseless and accused Sunil Kumar of attempting to create unwarranted discord within the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). “Sharing a cake is not a political crime,” Varghese told reporters on Saturday, adding that no explanation had been sought by the CPI leadership over the incident.
Sunil Kumar, a former minister and CPI candidate for the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat, had alleged the gesture was part of a political ploy. Kumar, who lost to BJP’s Suresh Gopi in the general elections, claimed the act symbolized deeper political alignments.
Varghese questioned Sunil Kumar’s intentions, suggesting the allegations aimed to force his removal as mayor and potentially align him with the BJP. “I suspect the motive behind these accusations is to expel me and push me toward the BJP fold,” he remarked.
The controversy deepened after Sunil Kumar alleged that K. Surendran’s visit to Varghese was calculated, stating, “Surendran didn’t offer cakes to any other mayor.” Kumar also pointed to prior instances where Varghese welcomed BJP leaders, raising concerns about his allegiance to the LDF.
The political dynamic in the 55-member Thrissur council adds weight to the issue, as both the LDF and UDF hold 24 seats each, with the BJP controlling six. As an independent councillor, Varghese’s position remains critical to maintaining the balance of power.
Varghese defended his interactions with Surendran, describing them as sincere and non-political. He also called on Sunil Kumar to address claims that the CPI leader had previously interacted with Surendran at his residence.
The debate follows a heated Lok Sabha election in Thrissur, where Malayalam actor and BJP leader Suresh Gopi defeated Sunil Kumar by a margin of 74,686 votes. The episode has reignited discussions about political strategies and loyalties within Kerala’s evolving political landscape.
