Patna, 13th Nov. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar faced mockery from his former deputy, Tejashwi Yadav, after he was seen touching the feet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a function in Darbhanga on Wednesday. The incident occurred after Kumar’s speech, when he, in a gesture of apparent respect, bent down to touch the feet of Modi, who is just a year older than him.
A video clip showing the moment went viral on social media, capturing the startled reaction of Modi as he quickly rose from his chair, placed a hand on Kumar’s shoulder, and urged him to sit.
Responding to questions from journalists about the incident, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav sarcastically remarked, “What is unusual? He (CM) has been of late falling at the feet of all. He did so even to officials of his government.” Yadav’s comment alluded to Kumar’s earlier behavior this year when he had offered to touch the feet of IAS officers and even a private company engineer to push for quicker project completions, a move that sparked criticism.
Kumar’s public displays of extreme humility, particularly towards PM Modi, have not been well received by his critics. His actions have become a point of political contention, especially after similar gestures at events like Yogi Adityanath’s 2022 swearing-in ceremony and during rallies in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
The latest incident has revived concerns about Kumar’s political positioning and his relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Prime Minister was in Darbhanga to lay the foundation stone for an AIIMS, and Kumar’s gesture of deference has once again fueled political debate within the state.
Earlier this month, Kumar caused a stir when he attended a religious function hosted by BJP veteran R K Sinha and, once again, touched his feet, adding to the growing speculation over his political maneuvering.
