Swami Premanand Maharaj Targeted in Deepfake AI Scam; Ashram Issues Warning Against Manipulated Videos
Mathura: In a concerning instance of AI misuse, renowned spiritual leader Swami Premanand Maharaj has become the latest victim of deepfake technology, with doctored videos featuring manipulated versions of his voice going viral on social media.
The fake clips, which appear to portray Maharaj Ji endorsing religious products and profit-driven business ventures, have caused alarm among his followers and the wider spiritual community. These AI-generated videos mimic his distinct voice and sermon style, falsely presenting commercial messages as his teachings.
Condemning the spread of such manipulated content, the Shri Hit Radha Keli Kunj Parikar — the official body of Premanand Ji Maharaj’s ashram — issued a public notice urging devotees and digital users to refrain from creating, circulating, or believing such deepfake content.
“We wish to alert and caution everyone that many people are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to manipulate and translate the revered sermons of Pujya Gurudev Shri Hit Premanand Govind Sharan Ji Maharaj irresponsibly,” the notice stated. “This is a grave violation of both ethical and legal boundaries. The sanctity of Maharaj Ji’s voice must be preserved. Do not use AI to fabricate or distribute such content.”
The spiritual organisation called for collective responsibility to uphold the integrity of Maharaj Ji’s original teachings, which are rooted in devotion to Lord Krishna and are followed by millions across India and abroad.
Swami Premanand Maharaj is widely revered for his Krishna bhakti and spiritual discourses, which have offered guidance and solace to generations. His teachings emphasise unconditional love, devotion, and service to Lord Krishna, and he remains one of the most respected saints in the Hindu faith today.
Experts warn that deepfake technology, while impressive in its capabilities, poses a growing threat to public trust and information accuracy. The ability to convincingly alter voices and visuals makes it a powerful tool for disinformation, with potential for widespread misuse in areas ranging from religious to political and financial spheres.
Authorities and cybercrime experts are now being urged to take stronger action to monitor and prevent the misuse of AI-generated content that targets public figures and religious leaders.
