New Delhi, 5th August. The Supreme Court on Monday criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for failing to adhere to its order to consider remission pleas within the specified timeframe. The court directed the principal secretary of the state’s prisons department to appear before it on August 19.
“We want to correct the system,” said a bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Augustine George Masih during the hearing of a convict’s plea seeking remission under the state’s applicable policy. The bench instructed the principal secretary to attend the proceedings via video conference.
The court expressed frustration when the state’s counsel requested additional time, noting that four months had already passed without progress. The Justices remarked, “Again you are asking for two more months to decide the plea. Nothing has been done.”
In April, the Supreme Court had granted the Uttar Pradesh government six weeks to address the matter. By July 10, the court was informed that no action had been taken, despite favorable recommendations from jail authorities regarding the petitioner’s case.
