New Delhi, 23rd May.
In a hearing on Wednesday, a Supreme Court vacation bench, comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma, expressed dismay over criticism despite judges’ dedicated efforts, even during vacations. The remark came during a plea by former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, challenging his arrest in a money laundering case and seeking interim bail for election campaigning.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Mr. Soren, cited a two-month delay in a verdict by a Jharkhand High Court bench, affecting citizens’ rights. Responding, Justice Datta acknowledged judges’ efforts, emphasizing the need for expeditious disposal of cases.

The bench highlighted challenges faced by courts, including delays in government appeals and workload pressures. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju supported court vacations, citing judges’ extensive workload. Sibal echoed this sentiment, noting the judiciary’s significant workload in India compared to other countries.

The bench emphasized the importance of timely decisions, especially in cases involving personal liberty, and highlighted established guidelines for case assignment. Justice Sharma reiterated the priority given to such matters in high courts.

Sibal emphasized the judiciary’s daily challenges, underscoring the need for efficient case management. The bench concluded by stressing the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice promptly, despite ongoing criticisms.
