The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of DMK minister V Senthil Balaji, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for money laundering.

Balaji had requested bail on health grounds. The Madras High Court had previously dismissed his bail plea on October 19, stating that he could potentially influence witnesses if released on bail.

After reviewing the health reports, a bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and SC Sharma from the Supreme Court determined that his health condition was not severe enough to warrant bail. However, they granted Balaji the freedom to approach the trial court to seek regular bail, clarifying that any negative remarks made in the interim order would not hinder his ability to file a regular bail application.

Since the bench showed reluctance to entertain the matter, the plea was withdrawn and the case was dismissed. Previously, the Supreme Court had instructed Mr. Balaji to provide his medical reports.

The high court had dismissed the bail plea, stating that Balaji’s health condition did not require release on bail for proper care.

Balaji was arrested on June 14 by the ED for his involvement in a money laundering case related to a cash-for-jobs scam that occurred during his tenure as the Transport Minister in the previous AIADMK regime.
