Tehran, 6th Nov. Iran government’s spokesperson has clarified that a female student who stripped to her underwear at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University is not seen as a security threat but rather as a “troubled individual” in need of treatment.
The young woman, identified on social media as Ahoo Daryaei, undressed on Saturday in what was widely interpreted as a protest against Iran’s strict Islamic dress code. Speaking to the press on Tuesday, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani emphasized that the incident should be approached socially, rather than as a security concern. Daryaei has been transferred from a police station to a treatment center, though the details of the treatment remain unclear.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the woman’s identity. Mohajerani stated that it was too early to confirm whether Daryaei would return to university, adding that she needed treatment before further steps could be taken.
The woman was initially detained by university security. Amir Mahjob, a university spokesperson, said on social media that she had been under severe mental distress and was diagnosed with a mental disorder after being examined by police.
This incident follows a broader trend of Iranian women defying the country’s hijab laws, a movement sparked by the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, who died in custody after being arrested by the morality police for allegedly violating the hijab rules. The protests that followed were violently suppressed by security forces.
Amnesty International condemned the arrest of the student, describing her actions as a protest against compulsory veiling. The rights group called for her immediate release.
Meanwhile, Iran’s hardline Tasnim news agency framed the incident as part of a larger anti-government movement, drawing comparisons to the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests. Khabaronline, another news outlet, reported that government officials confirmed the young woman would not face criminal charges.
