Kolkata, 21st Nov: A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Bangladesh’s Narsingdi region on Friday morning, triggering strong tremors across parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata. The quake occurred at 10:08 am, at a depth of 10 km — shallow enough to generate noticeable shaking — according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Residents in Kolkata rushed out of buildings as the tremors were felt for several seconds. Social media users described the quake as “intense,” with some claiming their buildings shook for up to 30 seconds.

“I think I just experienced the most intense earthquake of my life, Kolkata was shuddering like a fragile plastic tunnel,” wrote one user on X. Another noted the jolts were strong enough “to wake someone up from sleep.”

Visuals and local reports showed people stepping out onto streets in areas across the city and neighbouring districts as a precautionary measure.

There were no immediate reports of injury or structural damage at the time of filing this report.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as aftershocks cannot be ruled out.
