Colombo, 19th July. Acting President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has imposed a state of emergency in the country.
The action aims to handle the economic crisis and social discontent.
An emergency has been declared for the sake of public security, the maintenance of essential supplies and services for communal life, and the safeguarding of public order, according to a government notification issued late last night.
Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe also asked political parties to set aside their differences and establish an all-party government to help the country recover from the economic crisis, while assuring the people that talks with the IMF were nearing completion.
Singapore, meanwhile, has issued an ultimatum to former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Singapore officials have informed him that he cannot stay in the country beyond the first 15-day permit.
On July 13, he escaped via the Maldives and arrived in Singapore the next day.
On July 14, Gotabaya Rajapaksa issued his resignation letter to the Parliament Speaker through email, only days after demonstrators stormed the presidential palace demanding his resignation.
