SRH’s IPL 2025 Playoff Hopes Hang by a Thread, Needs a Miracle to Qualify

GG News Bureau
Hyderabad, 3rd May:
Sunrisers Hyderabad kicked off IPL 2025 in a record-breaking fashion, posting a mammoth 286 runs in their opening clash against Rajasthan Royals and clinching victory by 44 runs. However, that explosive start soon turned into a distant memory as the team’s campaign spiraled downward, suffering a string of defeats.

Despite boasting the record for the highest-ever IPL innings score, SRH has struggled to even cross 150 in several games. Under skipper Pat Cummins, both the batting and bowling units have failed to deliver consistently, and tactical missteps have only added to their woes.

So far, SRH has managed to win only 3 out of their 10 matches, placing them 9th in the points table with just 6 points and a net run rate of -1.192. While qualification for the playoffs seems unlikely, it is not entirely out of reach — but it would take a near miracle for Hyderabad to make it.

What SRH Must Do to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

The Orange Army has four league matches left — against Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Lucknow Super Giants. To stay in contention, SRH must win all four remaining games, and not just by narrow margins. Big victories with dominant performances — especially when chasing — will be essential to boost their net run rate.

If SRH wins all four, they will finish with 14 points — the same as MI, GT, and RCB, who are currently poised to qualify. However, even with 14 points, SRH’s fate will depend heavily on how other teams perform.

SRH’s Slim Path to Playoffs – Dependent on Several Results

For Hyderabad to break into the top four, the following conditions must align:

  • Punjab Kings, currently at 13 points with 4 games left, must lose all their remaining matches.
  • KKR, sitting mid-table, must also lose all four of their remaining games.
  • Delhi Capitals, who currently have 12 points, need to beat Punjab but lose their remaining three fixtures (including one against SRH).
  • Lucknow Super Giants, at 10 points, should win only against Punjab and lose their other three matches — one of which is against SRH.

If all these outcomes occur, SRH could find themselves tied at 14 points with Delhi Capitals. In that case, qualification would come down to net run rate — and SRH would need theirs to be superior.

Playoffs or Prayers?

While mathematically possible, SRH’s playoff dreams now rely not only on winning games, but on a complex sequence of losses by at least four other teams. From being a team that once eyed a 300-run mark, Hyderabad’s campaign now teeters on hopes and hypotheticals.

As things stand, it would take nothing short of a miracle — or a perfect storm of results — for SRH to make it through. But in the unpredictable world of IPL, miracles have happened before. Can Sunrisers script one of their own?
