Bhadohi, 14th Sept. A case has been filed against Samajwadi Party MLA Zahid Beg and his wife, Seema Beg, for allegedly torturing and assaulting a minor maid. The complaint follows the rescue of a 17-year-old girl from their residence in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh.
The Labour Department initiated legal action late on Friday night after receiving a recommendation from the Child Welfare Committee chairman, PC Upadhyay. This follows the suicide of another teenager at the MLA’s residence and the subsequent rescue of the 17-year-old girl during a raid by Bhadohi Police and Labour Enforcement Department on Tuesday.
According to Bhadohi SP Meenakshi Katyayan, the teenager, who had been working as domestic help for the past eight to nine years, and another minor employed for the last two years, were both subjected to severe conditions. The MLA and his wife face charges under various sections of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, Juvenile Justice Act, and relevant sections of the BNS.
The rescued girl has been sent to a government children’s home in Prayagraj. Additionally, the Uttar Pradesh Labour Department had previously issued a notice to the couple for employing the minor in violation of labor laws. The notice required a response within a week.
The Labour Enforcement Officer Jai Prakash Singh noted that the teenagers were forced to work in conditions that violated labor laws and lacked proper compensation.
