Seoul, May 1, 2025: In a surprising move, South Korea’s acting president, Han Duck-soo, announced his resignation on Thursday. The announcement, made amidst the upcoming South Korean elections, has sparked widespread speculation that he intends to run for president in the elections scheduled for next month.
Han’s resignation has significantly heightened the political atmosphere, particularly given the rumors of his potential candidacy. He assumed the role of acting president after the impeachment and subsequent imprisonment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
In a televised address, Han stated that he decided to step down to take on “a greater responsibility” for the country. This statement strongly indicates his intention to participate in the presidential elections. According to South Korean media reports, Han may officially launch his presidential campaign as early as Friday.
Han was initially appointed as Prime Minister by former President Yoon Suk Yeol. However, following Yoon’s impeachment, he was elevated to acting president. Now, with the presidency vacant, a by-election is being held.
The ruling conservative People Power Party is facing public discontent due to the turmoil following Yoon’s declaration of “martial law” on December 3rd of last year. Consequently, Han Duck-soo is being viewed as a strong potential presidential candidate from the party.
