Ranchi, 12th September. The government of Hemant Soren is operating on borrowed time. It appears to be taking its last leg as it was seized in a number of cases of irregularities and illegalities. The Soren Government erroneously thought it was above the law and ran the state according to its whims and fancies. However, the law is catching up with them. All indications point to an unceremonious exit from politics and that the state will be liberated from the Sorens’ stranglehold.
“Office of Profit” is a disqualification case
With the disqualification sword hanging over the heads of several members of the Soren family, Jharkhand politics is about to change dramatically.
According to reports, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has recommended that Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais disqualify JMM MLA Basant Soren. Within a few days, the Governor is expected to officially announce the ECI’s recommendation on the disqualification issue.
Basant Soren was accused of co-owning a mining company with his brother, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Basant Soren’s mining lease was not disclosed in his election affidavit. These ‘illegal benefits’ are equivalent to the office of profit, and if these claims are proven to be true, Basant Soren is delisted from assembly membership.
Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais had requested ECI recommendations to investigate allegations leveled by several BJP leaders. The BJP leaders had requested that Basant Soren be removed from the State Assembly under Section 9A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. They accused Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his brother Basant Soren of abusing power and illegally granting themselves a mining lease.
State politics is experiencing a déjà vu moment
Just two weeks prior, a similar development occurred, and the ECI recommended that the Jharkhand Chief Minister be disqualified under the same section (Section 9A). He was charged with abusing his position as Minister-in-Charge of the Department of Mines and Geology. He allegedly granted himself a stone mining lease last year.
However apart from these, the Soren family is involved in a number of cases involving financial impropriety, fraud, and money laundering. CM Soren, his brother Basant Soren, CM’s wife Kalpana Soren, and close associates of the Soren family are facing legal troubles in multiple cases, and all of these cases are nearing their conclusion, adding to the infamous and powerful Soren family’s worries.
Dumka MLA Basant Soren has been accused of engaging in appeasement politics and allowing the state’s law and order to deteriorate. Apparently, two heinous cases of rape of Hindu girls occurred in his constituency, but he was in Delhi window-shopping undergarments.
All of these developments indicate that the Soren family’s problems are only getting worse. They ran the state as if there was no tomorrow and assumed they were not accountable to the state or the law, forgetting that justice always triumphed in the end. All of their irregularities and frauds are now coming back to haunt them. The disqualification of CM Hemant Soren and his brother Basant Soren could put an end to Soren rule in the state for good.
