New Delhi, 10th March. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections have prompted political maneuvering. In Tamil Nadu, six years after its founding, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party led by actor Kamal Haasan joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led coalition on Saturday. In the approaching Lok Sabha elections, Kamal Haasan’s party will back the DMK, but Haasan will not run a candidate. For the DMK to continue supporting Kamal Haasan in the Lok Sabha elections, he has set a condition. In exchange for support, actor-turned-politician Haasan has demanded that his party be given a seat in the Rajya Sabha during the 2025 elections.
On Saturday, Kamal Haasan and MK Stalin signed an agreement. After reaching a deal, Kamal Haasan announced that he would not run for the Lok Sabha. MNM has made the decision to join the alliance headed by the DMK. Following this coalition, the DMK has so far given the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) two seats apiece. It has given the MDMK one seat, the VCK Villupuram and Chidambaram constituencies, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Ramanathapuram constituency, and the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) Namakkal constituency. Seat assignments and the alliance between the Congress and DMK might also be revealed soon.
Stalin and Haasan’s agreement confirmed
At the DMK headquarters in Anna Arivalayam, Haasan signed the agreement with Chief Minister MK Stalin, the President of the ruling party. Following the agreement, Haasan said that he joined the alliance for the good of the nation, not for any particular position. It is notable that MNM ran for two independent seats in the six years after its founding, but was unsuccessful.
In 2018, Kamal Haasan started a party
The two leaders have agreed that the MNM party will conduct campaign work in the 39 Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha seats as well as the one Puducherry area. In 2018, Haasan established his party. He declared at the time that it would address issues from a centrist perspective. The party ran independently in the 2019 Lok Sabha and 2021 Assembly elections, but was unsuccessful in both contests, with the DMK-led alliance winning both.
Will DMK play another inning like in 2019?
When it comes to the Lok Sabha elections in South Bharat, the DMK has forged an alliance with six different parties, including Kamal Haasan’s party, in the state of Tamil Nadu. With six allies, DMK has finalized the seat-sharing agreement. These parties have agreed to a seat sharing arrangement based on the 2019 formula, in which they were awarded nine seats as previously. The negotiations with Congress, a crucial ally, are still ongoing. But just like in 2019, DMK has made it an offer of nine seats in total this time around. The previous time around, this alliance had won 38 of the 39 seats available, while Congress had won 8 of the 9 seats.
