Gangtok, 29th May: Marking a historic milestone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed the golden jubilee celebrations of Sikkim’s statehood, hailing the state as a “pride of the nation” and unveiling a new chapter of development for the picturesque Himalayan region. Though inclement weather kept him from being physically present, the Prime Minister connected with the people of Sikkim via video conferencing, promising to visit the state soon and share in their celebrations.
The event, themed “Where Progress Meets Purpose, and Nature Nurtures Growth”, was filled with emotion, vision, and a deep appreciation for Sikkim’s achievements over the past five decades. “Fifty years ago, Sikkim didn’t just join India’s map—it became one with India’s soul,” the Prime Minister said. “Today, we celebrate not just a date, but the dreams and determination of generations.”
Development with Dignity
PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several development projects ranging from healthcare and infrastructure to tourism and sports. A 500-bed hospital was dedicated to the state, and ropeway projects were launched to improve connectivity in remote regions. New highways, including the Atal Setu and the upcoming Bagdogra-Gangtok Expressway, are expected to boost both local mobility and tourism.
“Sikkim has shown that development and ecology can go hand in hand,” Modi said, praising its status as India’s first fully organic state and its rich biodiversity. “Our dream is for Sikkim to become a Green Model State—not just for India, but for the world.”
The Northeast at the Heart of India’s Progress
The Prime Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to inclusive growth, especially in the Northeast. “In the last ten years, we’ve put the Northeast at the centre of India’s development journey,” he said. “We are pushing forward the ‘Act East’ policy with the spirit of ‘Act Fast’.”
He referred to the recent Northeast Investment Summit in Delhi, which drew top investors and resulted in major announcements for the region. Modi expressed confidence that this would unlock a wave of job opportunities for youth in Sikkim and neighbouring states.
Tourism, Youth and Global Dreams
Calling Sikkim a complete tourism package, the Prime Minister urged the state to transform into a global destination. “It’s not just a hill station—it’s a treasure trove of nature, culture, and spirituality,” he said, highlighting the UNESCO-recognized Kanchenjunga National Park and upcoming projects like the skywalk and Golden Jubilee Convention Centre.
He also lauded the state’s potential in sports tourism. Referring to legends like footballer Bhaichung Bhutia and Olympian Tarundeep Rai, Modi envisioned a future where “every village in Sikkim produces a champion.” A new sports complex in Gangtok, part of the Khelo India initiative, aims to nurture the next generation of athletes.
A Vision Beyond Borders
In a powerful message on national security, PM Modi linked the spirit of unity across India, from Kashmir to Sikkim. Referring to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, he said, “It wasn’t just an attack on Indians—it was an assault on humanity.” He spoke of the nation’s resolute response, including Operation Sindoor, asserting that India had demonstrated its military and strategic strength by dismantling terror bases and exposing Pakistan’s actions.
Looking Ahead: From 1975 to 2047
As Sikkim enters its next chapter, PM Modi reminded the audience of the road to 2047—when India will mark 100 years of independence and Sikkim will celebrate 75 years as a state. “Sikkim’s journey is an inspiration,” he said. “The next 25 years will be a golden opportunity to lead the world in sustainability, sports, tourism, and organic living.”
The message was clear: Sikkim, with its unity, resilience, and natural bounty, is no longer on the periphery—it is at the heart of India’s aspirations.
