Gandhinagar, 20th Dec. Shankar Chaudhary, a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, was elected unopposed as Speaker of the newly formed Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Furthermore, during the first session of the 15th state Assembly in Gandhinagar, senior BJP MLA Jetha Bharwad was elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker.

The nominations of ruling party legislators Chaudhary and Bharwad were supported by both the opposition Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). While Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel proposed Chaudhary’s name, state Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai proposed Bharwad’s name.

Between 2014 and 2017, Chaudhary, who represents the Tharad seat in the Banaskantha district, worked as a minister in the Gujarat administrations of Anandiben Patel and Vijay Rupani. He had failed to win the Vav seat in the 2017 Assembly election.

Bharwad, a six-time MLA from Panchmahal district’s Sehra Assembly seat, was the 14th Assembly’s Deputy Speaker for a year between 2021 and 2022.

Bharwad is the chairman of the Panchmahal Dairy, and Chaudhary is the chairman of the Banas Dairy.

All newly elected MLAs took the oath of office earlier on Monday.

The BJP retained power in the recently concluded Assembly elections, winning 156 of the state’s total 182 Assembly seats.

The Congress won only 17 seats, the AAP got five seats, while three seats went to independents and one seat to the Samajwadi Party.

On December 12, Bhupendra Patel was sworn in as chief minister alongside 16 other ministers.
