New Delhi, 20th Sept. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of alleged controversial remarks made by Karnataka High Court Judge Vedavyasachar Srishananda against a woman lawyer during court proceedings. A five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, convened to address the issue.
The bench has requested a report from the Karnataka High Court regarding the judge’s comments. “Attention has been drawn to media reports concerning the comments made by Justice… during court proceedings. We ask the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after consulting the Chief Justice of the high court,” the Chief Justice stated.
The court indicated that it may establish basic guidelines following the review of the report, which is expected to be submitted within two days. The matter is scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday.
The controversy was sparked by a viral video showing Justice Srishananda reprimanding the woman lawyer, during which he reportedly made objectionable comments. Senior advocate Indira Jaising has publicly urged the Chief Justice to take judicial note of the incident.
