SC Rejects Plea to Increase Smoking Age

GG News Bureau

New Delhi, 22nd July. The Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking an order raising the smoking age from 18 to 21 and prohibiting the sale of loose cigarettes on Friday.

A bench of Justices S K Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia dismissed the appeal filed by two lawyers.

“If you want publicity, argue a good case…do not file publicity interest litigation,” the bench said during dismissing the petition.

The Supreme Court was hearing a public interest lawsuit filed by advocates Shubham Awasthi and Sapta Rishi Mishra seeking smoking-control guidelines.

The petition also requested that smoking zones be removed from commercial establishments and that the sale of loose cigarettes be prohibited near educational and healthcare institutions, as well as places of worship.
