New Delhi, 16th April. Yoga guru Ramdev and his associate Balkrishna faced the scrutiny of the Supreme Court today as it delved into the contempt case against Patanjali Ayurved concerning its misleading advertisements and claims related to Covid cures.
Acknowledging the duo’s significant contribution to yoga, the bench also questioned their “attitude,” pointing out the undermining of other medical systems in favor of Ayurveda. The court emphasized the principle of equality before the law, prompting Ramdev to express his intent to be more cautious in the future.
However, the court made it clear that forgiveness is not immediate, citing multiple violations and a lack of innocence regarding court proceedings. The next hearing is scheduled for April 23, with Ramdev and Balkrishna instructed to demonstrate their sincerity.
Outside the courtroom, Ramdev maintained faith in the judiciary, while inside, the court rejected two previous apologies, highlighting their publicity-driven nature. Justice Hima Kohli raised doubts about the sincerity of the apologies and emphasized that mere words were inadequate to rectify the contempt of court.
The case traces back to Patanjali’s controversial Covid remedy, Coronil, launched in 2021, which was followed by disparaging remarks about allopathy by Ramdev. Subsequently, Patanjali faced backlash from medical authorities and legal action over misleading claims in its advertisements.
Despite previous warnings and assurances, Patanjali’s alleged continued misconduct has drawn the ire of the court, signaling potential consequences for the company’s actions.
