New Delhi, 20th August. The Supreme Court has established a National Task Force to enhance the safety and working conditions of doctors, following the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who led the bench, directed the task force to file an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.
The task force will include prominent medical professionals such as Surgeon Vice Admiral R Sarin, Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Dr M Shreenivas, Dr Pratima Murty, and others, along with ex-officio members like the Union Cabinet Secretary and the President of the National Board of Examiners.
The court slammed existing laws for inadequately addressing doctors’ safety and condemned the West Bengal government and hospital administration for delays in FIR filing and for failing to prevent vandalism during protests.
The case, which has sparked nationwide strikes by the medical community, will be heard again on August 22.
