Mumbai- Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam on Friday alleged that the Mumbai Congress is on the brink of shutting down due to a severe financial crisis, resulting in unpaid rent and electricity bills at its party office. Nirupam, a former Congress state president who joined Eknath Shinde’s camp ahead of the assembly elections, blamed the party’s leadership for its downfall.
“The Mumbai Congress is just one step away from closure due to the incompetence of its leaders. The office, which operates on Maharashtra government’s PWD premises, has not paid rent for years, leading to dues of ₹18 lakh. The electricity bill has reached ₹5 lakh, resulting in power disconnection,” Nirupam said.
He further claimed that Mumbai Congress employees had not received salaries for the past nine to ten months and accused the party of being in “silent mode,” with no major events or political activities.
Taking a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, Nirupam said, “Rahul Gandhi came to Mumbai not as a Congress leader but as a YouTuber to shoot a video in Dharavi. While Mumbai Congress is struggling, its leaders are more focused on making videos.” He also criticized Congress’ alliance with Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), calling it a strategic blunder that weakened the party in Maharashtra.
Nirupam warned that Congress in Maharashtra would soon face the same fate as in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where it has lost significant political relevance.
His remarks come days after Harshwardhan Sapkal took over as the Maharashtra Congress chief, following Nana Patole’s resignation post the party’s poor performance in the assembly elections. In the 2024 polls, the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP (Mahayuti) coalition secured 235 of 288 seats, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a major setback, with Congress winning only 16 seats.
