New Delhi, 17th August. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the engine of the Sabarmati Express derailed near Kanpur at 2:35 a.m. on Saturday after hitting an “object placed on the track.”
The derailment involved twenty coaches of the train near Govindpuri station, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Vaishnaw stated via X (formerly Twitter) that evidence related to the incident has been secured and that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Uttar Pradesh Police are investigating. He noted the presence of sharp hit marks and emphasized that evidence has been preserved.
Rescue and relief operations are ongoing at the site. Railway Board officials are examining the possibility of miscreant involvement, as preliminary investigations suggest the engine struck a foreign object on the track.
“Foreign material was found near the 16th coach. The damage to the cattle guard of the engine indicates a significant impact,” an official reported. The loco pilot also noted that a boulder may have damaged the front portion of the engine.
The Patna-Indore train passed the same track at 1:20 a.m. without incident. In response to the derailment, Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner GS Naveen Kumar reported that buses have been arranged for affected passengers and alternative transportation provided. Seven trains have been canceled and three diverted due to the accident.
