New Delhi, 25th Nov: Officer Trainees of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) from the 76th batch called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

Addressing the young officers, the President said that revenue collection forms the backbone of nation-building. It is this revenue, she noted, that enables the government to invest in infrastructure, education, healthcare and social welfare. She emphasised that as participants in India’s development process, tax officers must ensure that collections remain smooth and cause minimum inconvenience to taxpayers.

The President highlighted that officers of the Revenue Service perform multiple functions—acting as administrators, investigators, facilitators of trade and enforcers of law. As custodians of India’s economic frontiers, they safeguard the nation against smuggling, financial fraud and illicit trade while also supporting legitimate commerce and global trade partnerships.

She said this role requires a careful balance between enforcement and facilitation, maintaining rule of law while enabling economic growth. Calling for systems that are transparent, accountable and driven by technology, the President underlined that integrity and fairness must remain central to their conduct. She encouraged the trainees to be innovative, analytical and technologically skilled as they begin their careers.
