Kolkata, 12th August. The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) India has announced a halt to elective services starting Monday to express solidarity with the ongoing protests by doctors in Kolkata.
The protests have erupted following the rape and murder of a trainee PG resident at R.G. Kar Medical College Hospital.
In a letter addressed to the Union Health Minister, FORDA urged the government to take the protest seriously and address the demands for justice and safety without delay.
The association called for an expeditious acceptance of the demands made by the resident doctors at R.G. Kar Medical College, emphasizing the need for the right to peaceful protest and protection from manhandling.
FORDAs’ demands include compensation for the victim’s family, implementation of enhanced security protocols for healthcare workers, and the formation of an expert committee to expedite the ratification of the Central Healthcare Protection Act.
The tragic incident involved the death of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, found early Friday morning at the hospital’s third-floor seminar hall with severe injuries.
A judicial inquest revealed multiple wounds, including in sensitive areas, along with bleeding from her eyes and mouth, a broken collarbone, and injuries to her neck, belly, and limbs.
