New Delhi, 21st July. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat rejected Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh’s request for a ‘Special Mention’ on the Manipur violence on Friday.
The AAP Rajya Sabha MP has requested a ‘Special Mention’ in order to convey a notice to the Upper House regarding the current state of affairs in Manipur.
When his request was denied, the AAP MP took to Twitter to express his outrage, calling the move the “height of dictatorship.”
“It is the height of dictatorship. There is violence in Manipur, people have been killed, women were paraded naked and we still don’t have the permission to speak about it on the floor of the Parliament,” the AAP MP tweeted in Hindi.
In the Upper House, Singh also moved a Suspension of Business Notice under Rule 267, asking a discussion on the Manipur crisis.
Manoj Kumar Jha, an RJP MP, has also moved a Suspension of Business Notice in Rajya Sabha under Rule 267, seeking that a session be dedicated to a discussion of the Manipur agitation.
In his letter to the Chairman of the Upper House, the RJD Rajya Sabha MP stated, “I would like to move a motion for adjournment of the business of the House under Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Rajya Sabha to discuss the ethnic violence that has been going on for more than two months.”
K Keshava Rao, a Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MP, also gave a Suspension of Business Notice under Rule 267 in Rajya Sabha for a discussion on the Manipur issue.
Meanwhile, Congress MPs Manish Tewari and Manickam Tagore submitted an adjournment motion to discuss the situation in Manipur, with the latter also asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a comment.
The demand for a discussion on the Manipur situation sparked a disturbance in both Houses on the first day of the Monsoon Session.
The uproar in Parliament was sparked over a viral video from Manipur allegedly showing two women being paraded in the nude.
With the Opposition in both Houses resolute on discussing Manipur on the first day of the Monsoon session, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday, while the Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice.
The women were allegedly gangraped and a total of four persons, including the main culprit, have, so far, been arrested in connection witn this incident.
Following obituary references, the Upper House was first adjourned till 12 noon, and then until 2 pm, with the Opposition requesting a discussion on the Manipur crisis.

The Lower House was adjourned for the day later, amid continuing chanting and slogan-shouting from the Opposition benches.
Opposition lawmakers urged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement in the Lower House, and that the government stop all other listed businesses and hold a discussion about the situation in Manipur.
The government stated it was open to discuss Manipur for a short duration.
Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’ Brien demanded a lengthy discussion on Manipur in the Rajya Sabha, saying, “We want a discussion on Manipur.” PM Modi must speak out on Manipur.
He also stated that the discussion about the prevailing state of affairs in the Northeast state should follow the 267 rule.
The second day of the Monson Session began at 11 a.m.
