Rajya Sabha Must Lead with ‘Dialogue, Discussion, Deliberation’ in 265th Session: Dhankhar

New Delhi, 22nd July. The 265th Session of the Rajya Sabha commenced on Monday with the Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar delivering opening remarks that emphasized the significance of the maiden Budget presentation by the newly elected government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the start of its third consecutive term after over sixty years.

In his address, the Chairman expressed confidence that the Rajya Sabha would set an example by moderating discourse and prioritizing national service over partisan interests. He underscored the need to lower political tensions and uphold the highest standards of parliamentary traditions, which would serve as a model for other legislatures in the world’s largest democracy and beyond.

The Chairman called for a focus on enriching and informed debates, stressing the importance of utilizing the session’s time effectively for the nation’s benefit.

He urged members to adhere to the principles of ‘Dialogue, Discussion, Deliberation, and Debate,’ fostering a robust environment for parliamentary discourse.

Additionally, the Chairman addressed concerns about the inappropriate practice of leaking Members’ communications to the public before they reach the intended recipients. He called for the avoidance of such practices to maintain the integrity of the House.

Concluding his remarks, the Chairman urged members to prioritize the nation above partisan interests and commit to collective action for the welfare of the people.

He expressed belief in the nation’s potential to achieve great things and emphasized that the Rajya Sabha, as a key institution in the democratic framework, should lead by example.
