Mumbai, 11th Sept. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde sharply attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, accusing him of displaying an “anti-reservation” stance that reveals a “petty mentality.” Shinde’s comments come in response to Gandhi’s recent statements during his visit to the United States.
Gandhi, who is currently on a tour of the US, spoke to students at Georgetown University, suggesting that the Congress party might consider scrapping reservation policies if “India is a fair place,” a situation he claims does not currently exist. During a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, Gandhi also alleged that democracy in India had been “broken” over the past decade but is now showing signs of resilience.
In response, CM Shinde took to social media platform X to express his displeasure, stating, “Whenever Rahul Gandhi goes abroad, he spews venom against the country. The country can never agree with Rahul Gandhi’s petty views. It has been Congress’s habit to do politics in the name of religion and caste.”
Shinde emphasized that the Mahayuti government, which includes his Shiv Sena party, the BJP, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, stands firmly in support of reservation policies. He asserted that as long as he is part of the Shiv Sena, he will ensure that reservation policies remain intact.
Shiv Sena deputy leader and former MP Sanjay Nirupam also weighed in, arguing that Congress could not abolish reservations even if it attempted to. Nirupam criticized Gandhi’s recent meeting with US lawmaker Ilhan Omar, claiming that she promotes a “Hindu-phobic” agenda and suggesting that Gandhi’s statements are not in India’s best interest.
