New Delhi: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the government to convene a special session of both Houses of Parliament in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
In his letter, Gandhi described the attack as one that has “outraged every Indian” and emphasized the need for a unified national response. “At this critical time, India must show that we will always stand together against terrorism,” he wrote.
Calling for a joint front, Gandhi stated, “The Opposition believes that a special session of both Houses of Parliament should be convened, where the representatives of the people can show their unity and determination. We request that such a special session be convened at the earliest.”
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also addressed a separate letter to the Prime Minister, reiterating the party’s call for an urgent special session. Kharge said the session would serve as a powerful platform to reflect India’s collective resolve against terrorism and demonstrate political unity during times of national crisis.
“The proposed session would express our joint stance and strengthen the country’s message against terrorism,” Kharge added, noting that solidarity and unity were imperative in the current climate of heightened security concerns.
The plea comes as political and public attention is sharply focused on national security following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, one of the most severe in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama bombing that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.
Earlier on Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly held a special session to condemn the Pahalgam terror strike. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary moved a resolution expressing strong disapproval of the attack and extending solidarity to the victims and their families. The resolution was adopted unanimously after opening remarks by Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather and in line with the Cabinet Committee on Security’s directives.
Following the incident, India has announced stringent diplomatic measures against Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of supporting cross-border terrorism.
