Lucknow, 17th April.
As the anticipation mounts regarding the Congress candidate for the crucial Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh on May 20, senior leader Rahul Gandhi kept the suspense alive during a press conference today.

When questioned about who the party will field against BJP’s Smriti Irani, Gandhi remained non-committal, stating that decisions regarding candidate selection are made by the Congress Election Committee.

“This is BJP’s question, very good. Whatever order I will get, I will follow it. In our party, all these decisions are taken by the Congress Election Committee,” Gandhi remarked, affirming his allegiance to the party’s processes.

With Amethi once serving as a bastion for the Gandhi family, speculations abound regarding Rahul Gandhi’s potential candidacy, especially after filing his nomination from Wayanad. The seat, previously held by his uncle Sanjay Gandhi, father Rajiv Gandhi, and later his mother Sonia Gandhi, holds symbolic significance for the family.

Adding to the intrigue, Robert Vadra, husband of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, expressed interest in representing the people of Amethi. However, he emphasized that the decision to contest in the Lok Sabha polls will be made at the appropriate time, respecting the desires of the electorate.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani secured victory in Amethi, ending Rahul Gandhi’s 15-year tenure in the constituency.

As the Lok Sabha polls approached, Rahul Gandhi asserted a strong undercurrent in favor of the opposition INDIA bloc, predicting that the BJP would be restricted to 150 seats. He cited reports indicating improvement in their prospects across various states, indicating a shifting political landscape.

With the electoral battle heating up, the nation awaits the unfolding of events leading to the crucial elections scheduled to be held in seven phases starting April 19, with the counting of votes slated for June 4.
