New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi accused Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla of preventing him from speaking in the House, alleging that the Speaker “ran away” when he sought permission to address the proceedings.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Gandhi expressed frustration over being repeatedly denied the opportunity to speak. “I don’t know what is going on. I requested him to let me speak, but he just ran away. This is no way to run the House,” said the Rae Bareli MP.
Gandhi claimed that parliamentary convention allows the Leader of the Opposition a chance to address the House, but he has been consistently denied this right for over a week. “Whenever I stand up, I am not allowed to speak. What we want to say is silenced. The Prime Minister spoke about the Kumbh Mela the other day — I wanted to raise unemployment, but I was not given the chance,” he added.
The Congress leader condemned the alleged suppression of Opposition voices, calling it a “non-democratic” approach and accusing the government of stifling debate. The Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned shortly after the incident, further fueling tensions in the House.
