Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to May 10 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Kremlin announced on Monday. The ceasefire decision, according to the Kremlin, is rooted in “humanitarian considerations.”
“By order of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Putin, the Russian side, guided by humanitarian motives, announces a ceasefire for the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War to last from May 8, 00:00 Moscow time to May 11, 00:00 Moscow time. Any military operations will be ceased during this period,” ANI reported, citing Kremlin sources.
Russia also reaffirmed its readiness to engage in peace talks without preconditions, aiming to address the underlying causes of the Ukraine crisis and to foster constructive engagement with international partners. Victory Day, celebrated on May 9, marks the end of the Great Patriotic War (1942–1945), Russia’s term for World War II against Nazi Germany.
The Kremlin urged Ukraine to observe the ceasefire as well. “Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example. In the event of any violations of the ceasefire by the Ukrainian side, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will deliver a proportionate and efficient response,” the Kremlin warned.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump, after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, commented on social media, criticizing recent Russian missile attacks on civilian areas, stating, “There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities, and towns over the last few days.”
