Priyanka Gandhi Slams Centre for Denying Relief to Landslide-Hit Wayanad

New Delhi, 14th Dec. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday accused the central government of withholding disaster relief for the landslide-affected people of Wayanad due to political considerations. She emphasized the need for impartial assistance during natural calamities, urging the Centre to prioritize humanity over politics.

Priyanka’s comments came during a protest by Kerala MPs in the Parliament premises, demanding a special relief package for Wayanad. The demonstration, staged in front of the Makar Dwar, featured slogans and banners advocating “Justice for Wayanad.”

“We are deeply disturbed that the government refuses to provide a special package for Wayanad despite the severe devastation. Appeals to the home minister and prime minister have gone unanswered,” Priyanka Gandhi said. She highlighted similar inaction in Himachal Pradesh, where the Congress is in power, despite repeated calls for assistance following large-scale destruction.

The Congress General Secretary accused the Centre of discriminating based on political motives, saying, “Natural disasters demand compassion, not politics. The victims are Indian citizens, and they deserve help, not excuses.”

Priyanka revealed that a note from Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this month merely outlined expenditure details, such as fuel costs for rescue operations, without addressing the core issue of relief. She stressed that the estimated damage in Wayanad is ₹2,000 crore, and the victims require immediate support to rebuild their lives with dignity.

The disaster, which struck Wayanad on July 30, devastated Punchirimattam, Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and parts of Attamala villages, claiming 231 lives and leaving many without homes or livelihoods. Priyanka urged the Centre to rise above politics and fulfill its responsibility to the affected citizens.

“Disasters are above politics. The people of Wayanad look to the government with hope. They deserve help, not indifference,” she said, calling for urgent action to alleviate the pain and suffering of the victims.
