Guwahati, 17th July. The All India United Democratic Front declared on Sunday that it will vote in the presidential election for Yashwant Sinha, the joint opposition nominee.

Despite being “sidelined” during Sinha’s recent visit to Assam, AIUDF MP Aminul Islam said his party will back the opposition candidate in the July 18 presidential election.

He said that the AIUDF’s name did not appear on the invitation card provided to political leaders for a meeting with Sinha.

“Our legislators were not invited to the programme organised at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra for the opposition nominee in the presidential poll,” he said.

Sinha travelled to Assam on July 13 to seek electoral support from the state’s opposition MPs and MLAs.

The Congress and the TMC, two major non-BJP parties in the nation, have picked Sinha, a former union minister, as their joint presidential contender.

“Our party will vote for Yashwant Sinha in tomorrow’s election for the next president of the country,” AIUDF legislative party leader Hafiz Bashir Ahmed said.

“The non-democratic and communal forces must be kept at bay. Hence, we are supporting him,” the AIUDF MLA said.

The Congress and the AIUDF fought the 2021 state elections as part of a “grand coalition” of opposition parties, but eventually split apart.

The AIUDF has 15 legislators and one MP in the Assam Assembly.

In the battle for the top post, Sinha will face Droupadi Murmu, the nominee of the BJP-led NDA.
