New Delhi 23 Apr 2025 :President Droupadi Murmu has delayed her official trip to Assam after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, officials at Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed on Tuesday. She was due in Guwahati on Thursday evening to take part in a series of public and official events.
The move follows a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that killed several security personnel and civilians. The attack has raised national security concerns and triggered immediate scrutiny of high-profile movement and events in the country.
A short statement released by Rashtrapati Bhavan stated, “In light of the current situation emerging due to the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the Hon’ble President has postponed her planned visit to Assam. New dates will be notified after proper consultation with concerned authorities.”
President Murmu was scheduled to inaugurate several development projects and attend a state-level cultural event during her three-day tour of Assam. Her tour was also seen as an overture to the northeast before major policy announcements in Parliament’s next session.
Although the President’s Office has not indicated if her schedule is to be changed or canceled entirely, officials have acknowledged that the move was taken strictly on the basis of national security and continuous evaluation of the terror threat.
The Jammu and Kashmir terrorist attack has already elicited stiff condemnation from every quarter of politics, with voices demanding strict actions against extremist groups in the country. Union Home Minister Amit Shah led a top-level meeting Tuesday night to gauge the security landscape.
State leaders in Assam sympathized with the Centre’s decision and confirmed that they would be working very closely with Rashtrapati Bhavan to defer the visit.
This postponement underscores the broader national implications of terror threats and the necessity for constitutional authorities to adapt in real-time to rapidly evolving security scenario.
