President Murmu led delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth of Mauritius, underscoring the mutual commitment to bolstering the longstanding partnership between India and Mauritius. During the discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing cooperation across various sectors.
A pivotal moment of the visit was the exchange of four crucial agreements:
1. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between International Financial Services Centres Authority (GIFT City) and Financial Services Commission, Mauritius.
2. MoU between Public Service Commission, Mauritius, and Union Public Service Commission of India.
3. Protocol amendment to the India-Mauritius Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), ensuring compliance with Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) Minimum Standards.
4. MoU between Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of India and the Independent Commission Against Corruption of Mauritius.
Furthermore, President Murmu and Prime Minister Jugnauth virtually inaugurated 14 community development projects funded by the Government of India. They also laid the foundation stone for a new Forensic Science Laboratory, a testament to the ongoing cooperation between the two nations.
In a gesture of goodwill, President of Mauritius, Shri Prithvirajsing Roopun, hosted President Murmu for lunch at the State House, Reduit, symbolizing the warm diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Earlier in the day, President Murmu visited Aapravasi Ghat and the International Slavery Museum, reflecting on the historical ties between India and Mauritius, especially concerning the descendants of the first indentured workers from India.
Before departing from Mauritius, President Murmu paid her respects at Mangalmurti Mahadev at the sacred Ganga Talao, concluding her visit with a spiritual touch.
During her visit, on March 12, 2024, President Murmu also graced the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as the Chief Guest, further solidifying the bonds of friendship between the two nations. Numerous Mauritian dignitaries seized the opportunity to meet with President Murmu following the ceremony, highlighting the significance of her visit in fostering bilateral cooperation and understanding.
